People give Sakimoto a bunch of shit basically for not being Uematsu, but I think I would ragequit the game if I had to listen to Uematsu’s repetitive melodies for several hours at a time while running through Leá Monde.

My favorite part of this particular piece is the dramatic shift that takes place about two-thirds of the way through. It sounds so different from everything that precedes it, yet it is able to blend in spectacularly when the track loops back to the beginning.

Hate the end of FFXII. Hate it so much. Disappointment.

Note it goes from cutscenes full of politics and winding plot to a linear dungeon-crawling mess capped off with a typical one winged angel scenario that magically fixes everything. Sigh.

Note that in Tactics all the final battle fixed was the main guy getting his sister back. Nothing got fixed until hundreds of years later, by a route that made an awful lot of sense.

I concur with your sentiment. While I loved the Pharos, and the scenes at the top with Gabranth and Dr. Cid, by that point, the plot just rushes to an end, and it’s very clear that at that point, they were just winging it. Matsuno’s fingerprints are very clearly visible, but the end product was truly butchered to accomodate the ridiculous direction the new management wanted to take the series in, which we now see today as Final Fantasy XIII, the evolution of the work they began with X.

It’s clear he was following in Guildenstern’s footsteps, or rather, Guildenstern was following in Vayne’s, though their motives differed, and the final battle’s theme refers to the party’s battle to free themselves and Ivalice from the veritable tyrant that was now before them, essentially mirroring Vagrant Story’s own ending, but that’s the problem right there. That whole part with Venat lending him power and Vayne’s transformation, I think, really just shouldn’t be there. It’s out of place. I love the music, it’s one of my favorite tracks from the game, but c’mon. And if the battle had been challenging, but it wasn’t that either. I had to gimp myself to make the battle last longer.

Those of you who have been following my Vagrant Story playthrough might remember that the Crimson Blades are the name of the Iocus Priesthood’s military force. I’m amazed that they added a Vagrant Story reference to Final Fantasy X, especially since the Ivalice Alliance didn’t exist when X was being made. X has throwbacks to other Final Fantasy games (like Biran and Yenke’s joke about Yuna’s statue needing a horn), but the fact that they included something from Vagrant Story makes me very happy.

Now I’m starting to think that the similarities between Gatta and Marach Galthena are more than coincidence, especially since Gatta is the one to talk about the Crimson Blades.

Let’s take a minute to talk about the Vagrant Story OST, shall we? For one, this soundtrack is proof that Sakimoto can make a melody as well as Uematsu can (back when I’d only heard XII, I figured he was very good at layering but his melodies weren’t as distinctly memorable - that’s not true). So let’s be hearing nothing of either being better than the other, because they write for different kinds of game.

That aside, I love this soundtrack. I love every boss theme and area theme, from the understated to the bombastic. Every theme is perfect for its context, and many are so perfectly suited as to evoke the exact emotions the scene alone would have. ‘The Truth’ is a prime example of that particular phenomenon.

Next - the motifs. Small snippets from Rosencrantz, Sydney and Guildenstern are littered throughout the music. Respectively we have a sinister wood-like noise, male voices, and a rather regal if unsettling low tune. There’s also a motif for the Kiltean Sect/the Rood, which I find strangely melancholy, and one that crops up throughout a lot of scenes. I’m not sure quite who or what it’s for - perhaps it’s Ashley’s or just the theme of the game itself.

This effect was also explored in Final Fantasy Tactics with Ovelia’s theme in particular, but not quite the same way or to the same extent.

As a short game it can afford to have unique pieces for important scenes, which are used to great effect. What gets me most, however, is the simultaneous variety and cohesion. Whether it’s the choice of sound font or something else, every song feels like part of the same world, but no two are quite alike. On one hand we have the staccato and clamour of the Limestone Quarry, on the other the frenetic notes of Dark Elemental, and balanced precariously on the left foot we have the playful menace of Snowfly Forest.

And included in it is what has to be my favourite boss theme. Tying together several themes, the theme is perfect for a creature drunk on power and quite beyond mortal ken - or redemption. Nonetheless the theme remains stately and threatening, as well as fitting to the pace of gameplay, which isn’t always fast enough to warrant a totally energetic theme.

By any means, a feast for the ears, and worth getting in hard copy. It’s not too hard to find, surprisingly.

The people of Valendia erected palings around the city borders of Leá Monde in an attempt to save them from the Dark. It must have worked, from what we can gather, because the general populace of Valendia know little about the city and even less about its magicks.
