Vagrant Story’s “Snowfly Forest” (Ice Level Week Day 4)
If you haven’t noticed I don’t really have a schedule. I try to do this daily, but sometimes I skip a day when I’m busy with too many other things. Also still trying to settle on a balance between being a simple read and being descriptive (my friends say they never understand any music theory jargon from me, so I have always left it out of Ashley’s Beatzone if I don’t plan on elaborating on terminology).
Hitoshi Sakimoto peaked during the Playstation years in a spectacular fashion. No longer held back as much as he had been in the earlier days of the Ogre franchise, he bloomed and reached a stylistic maturity with Final Fantasy Tactics, finally culminating further with Vagrant Story right here, which can be seen as a direct successor. With influences from Yellow Magic Orchestra to Queen, Sakimoto had a lot of eclectic ideas and brought an inspired flavor to to his orchestral sounds. Namely, his ability to pack in density with short, pop oriented bites, perfect for a game context. Also of note, Sakimoto’s compositions were directly tied to the game’s narrative and he spent time with the directors making sure that his music was representative of the feelings they wanted evoked.
